4th Grade Music
Students in fourth grade began the year with a friendly competition between the classes to see who could learn the silly song on the left the most quickly and accurately. This song can be sung in unison as well as in a round.
Alfred the Alligator
Have you ever been down the water spout,
To the very bottom of the water system,
There you'll find a little alligator who
Goes by the name of Alfred,
if you do, he's mine. I lost him.
I threw him down the water spout and
Now I'm feeling lonely 'cause he's gone.
I miss him.

Lo Peter
4th graders have begun the year learning a song from Ghana. From 1867 to 1957, the British colonized the area of Africa now known as Ghana. During this time, many British families relocated here. Young British children would sing songs and play games and the Ghanaian children would watch and listen and want to sing and play as well. However, since they did not speak English, what they would sing sounded a little different than the English children.
4th graders have enjoyed playing detective trying to decipher what English words the Ghanaian children must have heard. We also used iconic notation to determine how the melody is put together. Ask your child to sing the song and point along with the iconic notation below or point along with the audio track!

Let Us Chase the Squirrel
Let us chase the squirrel,
Up the hickory, down the hickory,
Let us chase the squirrel,
Up the hickory tree.
If you want to catch him,
Up the hickory, down the hickory,
If you want to catch him,
Learn to climb a tree.

Music Literacy
4th graders are beginning the year reviewing how to read and identify through listening melodic patterns that include do re and mi, and we will be adding la. This will help us prepare to begin note reading with recorders shortly. However, before reading these melodic tones, students will hear, sing, chant, and move to these notes to give the music context.
Recorder
Mrs. Nelson's class tips:
*Blow very lightly so you don't blow your candle out
*Make sure the holes are covered so you don't squeak
*Make sure you have your LEFT hand on top
*Blow into it; don't whistle
*When not playing, put it on your chin so you don't accidentally play
*When you are playing glance at your fingers and also look at the music. Don't get distracted.
*When you are done, make sure you clean your recorder

Who Can It Be Now?
Men at Work
Who can it be knocking at my door?
Go 'way, don't come 'round here no more Can't you see that it's late at night? I'm very tired, and I'm not feeling right All I wish is to be alone Stay away, don't you invade my home Best off if you hang outside Don't come in, I'll only run and hide Who can it be now? Who can it be now? Who can it be now? Who can it be now? Who can it be knocking at my door? Make no sound, tip-toe across the floor If he hears, he'll knock all day I'll be trapped, and here I'll have to stay I've done no harm, I keep to myself There's nothing wrong with my state of mental health I like it here with my childhood friend Here they come, those feelings again! |
Who can it be now?
Who can it be now? Who can it be now? Who can it be now? Is it the man come to take me away? Why do they follow me? It's not the future that I can see It's just my fantasy Yeah Hoo, hoo, hoo Who can it be now? Who can it be now? Who can it be now? Who can it be now? Oh oh oh who can it be now? Oh where we are Who can it, who can it Oh who can it now Oh where we are Yeah yeah yeah |
Feel So Close
by Calvin Harris
I feel so close to you right now
It's a force feel
I wear my heart upon my sleeve, like a big deal
Your love falls down, I mean surround me like a waterfall
And there's no stopping us right now
I feel so close to you right now
I feel so close to you right now
It's a force feel
I wear my heart upon my sleeve, like a big deal
Your love falls down, I mean surround me like a waterfall
And there's no stopping us right now
I feel so close to you right now
And there's no stopping us right now
And there's no stopping us right now
And there's no stopping us right now
I feel so close to you right now
It's a force feel
I wear my heart upon my sleeve, like a big deal
Your love falls down, I mean surround me like a waterfall
And there's no stopping us right now
I feel so close to you right now
I feel so close to you right now
It's a force feel
I wear my heart upon my sleeve, like a big deal
Your love falls down, I mean surround me like a waterfall
And there's no stopping us right now
I feel so close to you right now
And there's no stopping us right now
And there's no stopping us right now
And there's no stopping us right now
