Say Something
Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me to Anywhere, I would've followed you Say something, I'm giving up on you And I am feeling so small It was over my head I know nothing at all And I will stumble and fall I'm still learning to love Just starting to crawl Say something, I'm giving up on you I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you Anywhere, I would've followed you Say something, I'm giving up on you And I will swallow my pride You're the one that I love And I'm saying goodbye Say something, I'm giving up on you And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you And anywhere, I would have followed you Oh, oh, oh, oh say something, I'm giving up on you Say something, I'm giving up on you Say something |

What Makes you Beautiful
You're insecure
Don't know what for You're turning heads when you walk through the door Don't need make-up to cover up Being the way that you are is enough Everyone else in the room can see it Everyone else but you Baby, you light up my world like nobody else The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell You don't know, oh oh You don't know you're beautiful If only you saw what I can see You'll understand why I want you so desperately Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe You don't know, oh oh You don't know you're beautiful, oh oh That's what makes you beautiful So co-come on, you got it wrong To prove I'm right, I put it in a song I don't know why, you're being shy And turn away when I look into your eye-eye-eyes Everyone else in the room can see it Everyone else but you Baby, you light up my world like nobody else The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell You don't know, oh oh You don't know you're beautiful If only you saw what I can see You'll understand why I want you so desperately Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe You don't know, oh oh You don't know you're beautiful, oh oh That's what makes you beautiful Na na na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na Baby, you light up my world like nobody else The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell (You don't know, oh oh) You don't know you're beautiful Baby, you light up my world like nobody else The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell You don't know, oh oh You don't know you're beautiful If only you saw what I can see You'll understand why I want you so desperately Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe You don't know, oh oh You don't know you're beautiful, oh oh You don't know you're beautiful, oh oh That's what makes you beautiful |

Alfred, the Alligator
Have you ever been down the water spout,
To the very bottom of the water system, There you'll find a little alligator who Goes by the name of Alfred, if you do, he's mine. I lost him. I threw him down the water spout and Now I'm feeling lonely 'cause he's gone. I miss him. |
Students in fifth grade began the year with a friendly competition between the classes to see who could learn the silly song on the left the most quickly and accurately.
This song can be sung in unison as well as in a round. |
Komedianti (The Comedians) by Dmitry Kabalevsky
5th graders listened to a new piece of music and used musical mapping to discover the form of the song. This listening activity also provided students the opportunity to observe dynamics changes, melodic contour and encourages collaborative learning. Listen to the recording and see if you can tell which card goes with each part of the music. Also, check back soon to see student-generated musical maps!

The Lion Sleeps Tonight
5th graders have been working hard learning how to play chords on our barred instruments. After visiting Central High School for Male Vocal Arts Day, the boys in the class were excited to create arrangements of the song, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, a song they had sung with the middle school and high school guys. The only requirements for this assignment were to include at least one person playing the chords and at least one person singing. The rest of the musical ideas came from the students. We hope you enjoy our performances!

Music Literacy
5th graders are beginning the year reviewing how toread and identify through listening quarter and eight note rhythmic patterns this semester. They will also be learning about half notes. For each quarter note we will say, "du," for each pair of eighth notes we will say, "du-day," and for each half note we will be saying, "du___" holding it for two beats. However, before reading these rhythms, students will hear, sing, chant, and move to these rhythms to give the rhythms context.

Three blind mice, three blind mice,
See how they run, see how they run, They all ran after the farmer’s wife, Who cut off their tails with a carving knife, Did you ever see such a sight in your life, As three blind mice? |
Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream, Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily Life is but a dream. Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream, Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily Life is but a dream. |
We will be exploring how these three familiar songs can be sung together to create harmonies! Try singing Three Blind Mice or Row Row Row Your Boat while listening to the recording of Frère Jacques above!
